In 2007, when Braemar Castle was at risk of losing its unique collection and closing permanently, the local community stepped in to rescue the building and its contents with funding from a generous benefactor. The Castle was leased to the community and is now run by a dedicated team of volunteers and staff. In 2019, the community began a new £1.6m project to conserve the Castle, re-develop its grounds and deliver an exciting and innovative community activity programme for volunteering, learning and wellbeing called Raising the Standard.
Take a journey with us into living history and learn how the castle transformed from a redcoat garrison to a high society retreat with Royal connections and a host of colourful characters.
Braemar Castle would like to thank Amy Muir, Mark Purmal, Clive Hodgetts, and
James Heasman for generously volunteering to photograph the castle after it's renovations. The wonderful photographs and videos you see on this website are thanks to them, so please do take a look at their other amazing work.
